Very nice use of dynamics, soft and subtle and rip your face off power.
It's obvious that both of you are giving it your all on this track vocally, so the blend is really professional and radio friendly. Also love the keyboard and bass parts, which are less obvious than the guitars and vocals but compliment the music so well, a nice blend of ambiences and later in the sound some early 80's analog sounds.
The only thing that could be improved upon a little is the kick drum sound imho, which is a little overly prominent and a bit clicky sounding. Everything else is perfection personified !!!

Whoa, what a freaking fantastic vocal performance, Jennae. You should bring the vocals forward in the mix a bit. I love the ambience and the dark groove. The acoustic sounds so sweet with the bass and drum rhythm. Excellent instrumentation. The part of the tune where the electric guitar comes in and builds to a climax sounds really good and I can envision what you're trying to do, but the mix seems a bit off. The tom rolls are a bit heavy during that part, and the EQ could be adjusted on the guitar to fill out the dynamic range so that it has a bit more depth. The songwriting is outstanding and the vocal melody completely captures me. Thanks a bunch for letting me know about this.

Great vocals for sure It's hard for me to really hear the mix as a whole because I'm listening on my laptop. Though I do agree that the kick is a little "clicky" like what leeds said...BUT I don't think it really takes away from the overall sound I like how the vocals sound for the most part, but they seem a little odd at the harmonized parts...and here's what would help I think, because I used to do the same thing. If I were you, but I'm not you, its completely up to you...but if I were you, I would maybe turn the volume down a little more on the higher pitched vocals so they sound more in the background instead of sounding like 2 complete voices...know what I mean? I do really love how the song explodes though, how it gets so much heavier.
Overall, great piece of work here guys, I look forward to hearing the next one you cook up

I would just like to say a BiG Thanks to all you fine people who have taken the time to listen & commented on our collab!!!

I would also like to say a MASSIVE THANKS to the lovely Jennae for her beautiful vocals, acoustic guitar & fantastic lyrics!!!
An lastly... I would like to thank everyone for their constructive attributes although I would like people to try wherever possible to listen in HiFi & on a decent sound system, plus not get over critical if using a laptop...
I have listened to this on my Mums / Dads laptops & truly they do not do the song justice in anyway shape of form...
resulting in a tinnie almost mono-fied sound quality that doesn't come close to the true attributes of the song & mix!!!
SO... PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!!
Only get technical with the mix if you have a DECENT SOUND SYSTEM!!!
THANK YOU!!!

Good point Pete. I listened to the mix through my 400 dollar Sennheiser headphones and also through my expensive genelec monitors. Each one brought different emphasis to the song but it sounded great in each one. On the laptop speakers it was decidedly tinny and my laptop has way better speakers than most and a built in subwoofer in the battery compartment, which gives the bass response a bit more definition but is still poor compared to good cans or a good hifi or monitors.
Laptop speakers are without doubt, the worst kind of audio experience (my laptop has a subwoofer and still is poor), followed by desktop with cheap generic 10 dollar little white plastic speakers and then sub 50 dollar headphones, especially earbuds for Ipod etc !!
YOu can get a sense of the arrangement on these tunes and still appreciate a good piece of music but the distortions and poor frequency response does not lend well for giving mixing advice !

Dude I understand I am listening from laptop speakers...but I can still tell when I hear vocal layers that aren't lined up perfectly. I basically just stated that it might sound a little better-harmonized if you turned down the backing, higher vocal. Just because I have laptop speakers means I can't give my opinion on what might sound better? Obviously I can't hear the bass part as clearly because my laptop has no bass, but I never commented on the song's bass element. I commented on what I thought would make the vocals sound a bit better...though don't get me wrong, the vocals do sound outstanding.
And the reason I commented on that is because I used to double the vocals up all the time, leaving both layers with like the same volume. Just from experience, I know that it makes the vocals sound much better to have one of the harmonized layers a lot quieter than the other... It just blends a lot better that way. The portion I'm mainly focusing on is like the harmonizing on the second verse.
If you don't want criticism just because I have a laptop, let me know and I won't criticize.

I wasn't specifically being personal to you Moamers... BLESS YOU!!!
But... I did have a good listen on the laptop & the whole mix just sounds completely off...
Without that bass the vocals the whole lot has to much high gain & with the bass those vocals do blend a whole lot better... not to mention the stereo panning that just doesn't come across on the laptop!!!
Anyways buddy... You are one of my most trusted & respected mates...
Your input will always be valid!!!
|
LiQuidMetamo...
|
Date: September 29, 2007 @ 7:57 PM
Yeah, sorry Moam, nothing personal at all, honestly.
Just a generalized comment. Agree with Pete though, without the complete sound image, you will notice elements in the upper-mid frequency which will not sound right but add in the bottom end and it does balance out a whole lot better.
Moam, your point on harmonizing is a good one and that you need one element to be more dominant and the other complimentary. Although I personally found that to be OK on this mix in my expensive cans and monitors, the mix via my laptop does sound like adjustments need to be made. Unfortunately, I've yet to see good speakers in a laptop, even the 3,000 dollar plus gaming machines etc - they drain too much battery, so unless you take the sound outside of the laptop thorugh phones or sp/dif or whatever this problem will seemingly always exist.
Back to the music. Listened about 20 times to this song already, just love it. And still in time to be nominated for a DM award !!!!

Finally I have made it for a comment on this awesome Collab Aopete created with my ROUGH draft.
#1 let me all just inform you from which this concept and total outcome has stemed from.
I had created a PREMIXED and very ROUGH premix of a vocal idea with this guitar idea I had, and it was never intened really for others to hear so from this stand point.. realize.. that Pete here was working with premixed vocals AND my acoustic Guitar.. this unfortunately left him without the option of having the main vocals I created solo OR DRY for that matter and for us who do mix track do know that this can complicate the overall mix and make perfecting levels very difficult. In a long story short this has a tendency to force Pete into some levels and predestined mixing outcome that was beyond his control.
THAT BEING SAID
Me personally knowing what the first draft concept derived from, this total final production was euphorically excellented by the overall harmonics iwith his acompanying pieces and elements in this track.
The deep dark richness in the intro, just FABULOUS! man I love the Gothy essence and grit it gives to the over all tone of whats to come.. many applause to that alone
as for the metal part that comes in very unexpectedly.. I really appreciate that direction allowing for a really "STAND UP AND TAKE NOTICE" piece of the song. It's a nice rockin tonation added IMHO..
just to drop back again to the hollowness and simplicity once again..
nice!
but that end piece.. where the drums come in and start really pounding the beat really grabs me.. LOVE THAT! I really like the effects used and all the layers and mystic electronics peaking in the end.. I really dig this crazy genre mix in this one track.. Lots of creativity and experimentality in this production so koodles to Pete on all his mastery here.
I do think there is perhaps a few levels that could be beat into the ground disputively..
however..
I just prefer to just PLAY IT LOUD AND GROOVE ON!!

I really love the synths you chose to layer in the background during the verses. The drums and guitar give this a classic rock sound, I think.
Jennae's vocals are great, they are mixed wonderfully and have a nice thick sound to them.
The solos are cool Awesome guitar work, but the synths made this one for me.
Great song guys!

Glad you mentioned about the "quality" on mp3 - I've had issues with this for a long time - not only does the bit rate make a difference, but I've noticed a significant difference from site to site I feel many artists are getting inaccurate comments on their songs due to this problem. Anyway, moving on...
I'm in love with that lead guitar Great collab...Pete you are an awesome musician and producer You definitely have the Midas touch

vocal harmonies in a collab has been a rare occurence in my travails across inet omd's. this is great music. emphasis on music. vocals are terrific. mix on the electric guitar parts either have too much verb or just need to be brought up a tad i thought. still, nice to see someone not squashing the piss otta mixes. dynamics are wonderful on here. great work by both, certainly one of the best collabs i've heard.

OKAY... It's been buggin me for a while but finally I have re-done the mix!!!
Following the comments... here's what I have done...
Lowered the percussion mix on the heavier parts plus added bass EQ to the Kick.
Increased the presence on the bass guitar parts.
Remove the stereo-delay output track from my backing vocals... (some people were mistaking it for time-skew!!!)
Increased the levels on the vocals towards the end to bring them more higher in the mix.
Sorted the missing dual-layer synth part on the last chord-out just to increase the umpth!
There were probly a few more mods too...
But I guess I could just go on forever...
Thank you DM for the support, the listens & the AWARDS!!!
